Singing songs in Spanish; fun for mums/dads/carers and babies up to preschooler age.
We sing nursery rhymes together and each song has accompanying pictures and lyrics on my laptop. The lyrics help the mums to join in so even if you don't speak Spanish when you start you will be able to sing Spanish by the time you leave! Some children ignore the laptop completely whereas some begin to associate the pictures and words. Some sing along, and some flick through the books or play the instruments; they all absorb language in their own way so don't worry if your child does his or her own thing!
We're a supportive, friendly group, have a laugh together and enjoy a cuppa afterwards. I ask parents to pay £4 for their first child, with sibling discounts available. It is £1.50 for extra adults (eg grandparents) just so I can cover the cost of their drink. Price includes a cup of tea/coffee.
We meet weekly at 10.30am in Kings Heath Park Tearoom (Cartlands Tea Room, in the conservatory) on Wednesdays.
The Long Version:
Spanish Gemma is a mum living in Kings Heath, Birmingham, UK.
As a child I was taught Spanish and Catalan by my Spanish mum and as a result understand what it's like to be thought of as English by my Spanish family and Spanish by English friends and family. In fact Spanish Gemma is how some children referred to me at school !
As a mum I now interpret the positive asects of having a dual identity for my children, teaching them Spanish and playing games and doing craft along the way.
The short Version:
I am a CRB/DBS-checked billingual mum of two with a degree in Hispanic Studies.
